It is a technique in which anthropologist as <strong>non native outsider<\/strong> is supposed to learn local languages, culture, customs and perform them along with them as <strong>member of their community<\/strong>. He is then Supposed to collect <strong>social facts w\/o ethnocentric biases<\/strong> and arrange them in framework.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Scope of Field Work Studies<\/u> &#8211;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Field studies have been the landmark of cultural anthropologists<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>to Lesser extent of Sociologist &amp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>now Increasingly being done by Political Analyst<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Characteristics of Anthropological Field<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Prolonged residence of investigators<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>His participation &amp; observation of society<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Attempt to understand the inside view of societies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Society provides as laboratory.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Immersion in tribal societies, learning as far as possible, to speak, to think, to see, to feel and to act as a member of its culture and at the same time , a trained anthropologist from a different culture.\n<ul>\n<li>This standard was established by <strong>Malinowski&#8217;s <\/strong>Three residence with <strong>Trobriand Islanders.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Malinowski&#8217;s Argonauts of Western Pacific in 1922 <\/strong>revealed the potentiality of&nbsp; field work.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Psychology of Fieldwork<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>fieldwork requires first hand observation, recording or documenting what one sees &amp; hears<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Data generated depends upon field worker himself, his psyche, his level of involvement &amp; ability to see &amp; visualise things.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>History\/ Evolution of Anthropological Fieldwork<\/u><\/strong> &#8211; <em>examples<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Till 19th century, <strong>tribals<\/strong> were depicted as <strong>barbarous<\/strong> by armchair Anthropologist like Taylor, Frazer in their theory of classical evolution.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>However, towards the <strong>end of 19th Century<\/strong> , American Anthropologist <strong><u>Lewis Henry Morgan<\/u><\/strong>laid his field work\u00a0 on<strong> Iroquois Indian of Canada <\/strong>in his 1851 book, \u201c<strong>League of Iroquois\u201d<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>He wrote one of the first ethnographies,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>invented the <strong>study of kinship terminology<\/strong>, &#038; first time used <strong>genealogical method to study kinship org<\/strong> (found Iroquois\u2019s kinship system different from others)\n<ul>\n<li>This method was completely used by <strong><u>W.H.R Rivers<\/u><\/strong> in his study of <strong>Toda of Nilgiri hills <\/strong>in 1904<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>But actual field work tradition stared with expedition of <strong><u>Franz Boas<\/u><\/strong>on <strong>Baffin Island &amp; in&nbsp; <u>British Columbia<\/u> in 1883<\/strong>. He also conduced research on the <strong>Eskimos living in Northen Canada &amp; Kwakiutl Indians in N-W coast.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>He suggested <strong>necessity to collect date<\/strong> as much as possible before any generalisation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He also suggested that same cultural traitcan\u2019t be linked to same cause. Thus proving <strong>uniqueness<\/strong> of each culture in it\u2019s own ways. However, Boas\u2019s <strong>overemphasise<\/strong> on data collet w\/o any analysis was criticised by many anthropologist.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Amrican Anthropologist, under the leadership of <strong>Alfred Cort Haddon <\/strong>conducted research on <strong>Torres Strait Island (1899) <\/strong>adjoined by <strong>W.H.R Rivers <\/strong>and <strong>Saligman<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Later studies on tribal societies became more intense &amp; illuminating &#8211; <strong><u>Reddiffe Brown<\/u>, <\/strong>Pupil of River &amp; Haddon<strong>, <\/strong>conducted fieldwork on <strong>Andaman Islanders (1906) <\/strong>was first attempt by anthropologist to investigate Sociological aspect in primitive society.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Then in 1914, <strong><u>Malinowski<\/u><\/strong>, a physicist and pupil of Hobhouse, westermarck and Saligman conducted intense fieldwork for <strong>4 years<\/strong> on <strong>Trobiand Islander<\/strong>. This was first time that anthropologist conducted fieldwork in <strong>native language<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>Due to his fieldwork, the KULA system, which was considered as barbarous act by tribals was found to be economic relation embedded in Social matrix.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>With this expedition, fieldwork became integral part of Anthropology.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Later, <strong>Evans Pitchard&#8217;s<\/strong> study on <strong>Azande (1927) &amp; Nyers (1940)<\/strong> and wrote the classical book \u201c<strong>African Political system<\/strong>\u201d and laid foundation of <strong>Political Anthropology.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>He showed that kinship played an imp role in maintaining social order.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Conclusion<\/u><\/strong> &#8211; Thus FW tradition in \u24b6 was theoretically started by classical evolutionists but its systematic development was brought about by scholars of historical particularism, diffusionism, functionalism, cultural personality schools etc. It made \u24b6 studies more holistic &amp; authentic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Some other Examples<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong><u>Raymond Firth<\/u><\/strong> &#8211; field work among <strong>Tallency<\/strong> in 1949 &amp; studied primitive economy of Maoris of New Zealand<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><u>Margaret Mead<\/u><\/strong> &#8211; Sex &amp; Temperance in 3 primitive societies in 1935<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><u>Cora du Bois<\/u><\/strong> &#8211; projective technique in Alores<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><u>Seligman<\/u><\/strong> &#8211; Fieldwork on Veddas of Sri Lanka<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Modern field Work &#8211; <\/strong>Buford, Junker, Conklin<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Indian Field work Examples<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong><u>Verrier Elwin<\/u><\/strong> &#8211; Field studies such as The <strong>Baigas, The Maris etc<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><u>Furer-voh -Heimendorf<\/u><\/strong> &#8211; Fielfwork among the <strong>tribes in AP<\/strong> &amp; published a monograph c\/l \u2018<strong>The Chenchus<\/strong>\u2019<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Guidelines For Fieldwork<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Various Anthropologist has laid following guidelines<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>FW should be <strong>Longitudinal<\/strong> study at-least for 1 year.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Should be conducted by <strong>individual <\/strong>rather than group<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Researcher to learn <strong>native language<\/strong> of cultural being studied<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Along with <strong>Participant observation<\/strong>, <strong>techniques <\/strong>like <strong>interview, oral history <\/strong>to be used.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Researcher \ud83d\udc68\u200d\ud83d\udd2c&nbsp; to build proper <strong>temperament<\/strong> &amp; <strong>character<\/strong> as long stay in isolation &amp; diff cultures is tough.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have sound knowledge of <strong>general theory &amp; ethnography<\/strong> of region under study.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Importance of Fieldwork<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>FW has assumed central position in anthropological studies as it checks on <strong>ethnocentrism<\/strong> while evaluating &amp; Authentic<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Fieldwork in Contemporary Anthropology<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong><u>Anna Tsing<\/u> : <\/strong>her book \u201c<strong>Friction: Ethnography of Global connection (2004<\/strong>)&nbsp; based on <strong>Meriatus Mt., Indonesia<\/strong> \u2192 short term fieldwork, use of ethnographic fragments \u2192 studies human dominated landscapes, effect of globalisation, env activism &amp; env degradation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;<strong>Fieldwork is Not what it used to be<\/strong>\u201d by <strong>Cornell university<\/strong> in which authors analyses fw tradition in transition and analyses <strong>alternative&nbsp; models <\/strong>for professimal training in FW<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><u>Lila Abu-Lughod<\/u><\/strong> &#8211; in her work on <strong>Bedouin women<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>explore cultural&nbsp; pattern of this <strong>egyption society<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Technique, Method &amp; Methodology<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Research basically means <strong>search for knowledge.<\/strong> It is <strong>scientific and systematic <\/strong>search for pertinent info on specific topic<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Research Technique<\/u><\/strong> &#8211;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>it refers to behaviour and instrument we use in performing research operations such as making observation, recording data, technique of processing data and the likes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ex &#8211; Participant<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Interview<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Questionnaire &amp; Schedule<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Case Study<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Genealogical Method<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Life History<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Oral History<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Participatory Appraisal<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Below we will go more into depth with several fieldwork methods that are used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Observation&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Observation is the act\/method&nbsp; of noticing the things &amp; events as they exist &amp; occur respectively &amp; obtaining information from world around us. In <strong>John Dollard\u2019s <\/strong>words , \u201cThe primary research instruments is observing human intelligence, trying to make sense out of human experience.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Observation in Anthropology<\/u> &#8211; <\/strong>it is scientific technique &amp; <strong>oldest technique&nbsp;<\/strong> for data collection method used in qualitative research &amp; ethnography.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Merits<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>least invasive method &amp; so the behaviour of community is least likely to affected.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>minimally integrates themselves into the society they are studying &#8211; so have access to body of info<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>gathers data through verbal communication .<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>while attempting to remain non-intrusive of the culture.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>focuses on community interaction through language\n<ul>\n<li>&nbsp;History of individual &amp; community to understand community<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Thr open dialogue, c\/l a <strong>dialectic<\/strong>, in which information flows back &amp; forth b\/w researcher &amp; subject.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Various Types of observation put in practice are<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Controlled \/ Uncontrolled Observation<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><u>Controlled<\/u><\/strong>&#8211; in it anthropologist create atm artificially for observation. Extremely useful for experimental case study ,\n<ul>\n<li>these are descriptive in nature&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Involve minimum participation of observer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><u>Uncontrolled<\/u> &#8211; <\/strong>in it conduct research in society as member but universe of study is nature so can\u2019t controlled.\n<ul>\n<li>Procedure &#8211; analysis of everyday events &amp; generalisation based on that<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Structured \/ Unstructured Observation<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><u>Structured<\/u> &#8211; <\/strong>characterised by careful definition of units to be observed, information to be recorded, &amp; the selection of pertinent data for observation &amp; standardisation of cond of observation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><u>Unstructured<\/u><\/strong>&#8211; contrasting to above<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Participant \/ Non- Participant Observation<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><u>Non &#8211; Participant<\/u><\/strong>&#8211; in it anthologist studies a particular society or culture but not participating i.e limited interaction as a member of that society.\n<ul>\n<li>Anthropologist can be thought as the <strong>fly on the wall.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>used to examine the details about &#8211; how the subject interact with one another &amp; environment around them &amp; body behavior (e.g eye gaze, facial expression), speech styles (e.g pitch)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>But usually the <strong>Emic approach <\/strong>is preferred when observing social context.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><u>It has some limitations<\/u><\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Observer Effect<\/strong> &#8211; This is caused by the presence of the research having an influence over the participant&#8217;s action.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>While using it the researcher&#8217;s opinions may oppose that of participant&#8217;s on a certain issue.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The only solution to this problem and to have a fuller and unbiased take on the research is to use both non-participant and participant method.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Most important observation is participant <strong>observation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Participant Observation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>PO is one type of scientific technique for data collection used in qualitative research &amp;
