In&nbsp;<strong><u>Britain<\/u><\/strong>, Social Anthropology was earlier known as Ethnology.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Origin<\/u><\/strong>&nbsp;&#8211; Started in European and American universities. Came up as independent discipline.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>The word ethnology comes from the Greek work ethnos meaning \u201cpeople\u201d &amp; logia, meaning \u201cstudy of\u201d.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Nature of Discipline<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Different from ethnography, it was much wider canvases, with more wider coverage and wide gamete of historical experience.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>it talked about cultural as well as biological aspect of human beings.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It also takes about human variation &amp; diversity &#8211; in terms of race, language, culture&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ethnologists classify people on the basis of their distribution.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It looks people from an Eric point of view.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is narrative, historical and comparative.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It can also be c\/l as historical study as it talks of historical migration, climate, population movement, evolution of language, considers historical sites.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It uses a comparative approach to analyse culture (because of this, in much of the 20th C, Social anthropologists concentrated most on ethnography, while cultural \u24c5 consented most on ethnology.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It need not be based on primary data, so also doesn\u2019t require close relation with people, it can also be b\/o ethnographies.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It studies cultures at different times and it different places.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ethnologists often conc on specific sub fields of anthropology&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Three types of ethnology &#8211; (1). Evolutionary ethnology (2). comparative ethnology (3). Comparative Ethnology.\n<ul>\n<li>Historical ethnology deals with&nbsp;ethnohistories, these look at how a particular culture has changed over time.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ethnography&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Define ethnography and present a brief history of ethnographic studies ? (2019)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ethnography refers to the practice of conducting a long-term, detailed study of a community. A written report b\/o this type of detailed observation of a community is also referred to as an ethnography.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Conducting an ethnography allows researchers to obtain a great detail of information about the group they are studying; however, this research method is also time- and labor-intensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Features of Ethnography<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Centrally it contains socio-cultural aspects.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Concert with contemporary society or societies of immediate past.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Location is precise, mainly focused on immediate observable location&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Not comparative ; as it is holistically focus on one particular society , event or aspect of society.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It developed as a part of colonial agenda.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Brief History of Ethnographic Studies<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Difference Between Ethnology and Ethnography&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>These were present at the time when social anthropology was emerging.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol>\n<li>Ethnology is concerned with both cultural and biological aspects, but ethnography is mainly focused on cultural aspects.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ethnology is more historical, with wide gamut of historical experiences but ethnography was concerned with contemporary societies.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The location of studies were changing in ethnology but not in ethnography&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Comparative ethnology tends to be more theoretical compared to ethnography, which tends to be more descriptive.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Starting of ethnography was due to colonial agenda ; but ethnology has intellectual agenda.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Social Anthropology<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Origin of Social Anthropology<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>In early 20th century &#8211; modern social anthropology emerged.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The term, social anthropology, came up in British studies &#8211; by&nbsp;<strong><u>Redclife Brown<\/u><\/strong>. He believe that it is a&nbsp;<strong><u>natural science of society<\/u><\/strong>&nbsp;i.e science of social entity.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It was come with the imagination that it could overcome following challenges\n<ul>\n<li>Of moving away from&nbsp;<strong>ideographic Science&nbsp;<\/strong>(particularistic Science) to&nbsp;<strong>nomothetic Science&nbsp;<\/strong>(Law generating science) i.e making it universalising science.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The challenge of conjectural, sceptical and speculative history.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Features of Social Anthropology<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Comparative studies are also part of social anthropology&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It can also be historical&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ethnology and Social Anthropology&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Ethnology takes into account historical, social and biological aspects with cross cultural perspective ; but social anthropology&nbsp; take into account only social historical canvases &amp; structural and functional aspects, mainly with objective of law generation.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>So, social anthropology has not retained the integration (only linguistic and archaeology) as ethnology (it has more scope of integration (of bio, language &amp; cultural, historical)&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ethnography and Social Anthropology<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Social anthropology is also concerned about competitive studies ; but in ethnography there was no concept of comparison.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ethnography was also devoid of theoretical concept, mainly based on evolution. It conjectural historically aspect of it was highly rejected by anthropologists&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Relation with Sociology<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Introduction<\/u><\/strong>&nbsp;&#8211; \u201cSociology is the Scientific Study of Society, Social relationships including Pattern of Social Communication, and Culture\u201d. Where as Anthropology is&nbsp;<strong>a biological &amp;&nbsp; social science<\/strong>. It deals on the one hand with man as a member of animal Kingdom and on the other with man&#8217;s behaviour as a member of society<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Views of Few Scholars<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>A\/t&nbsp;<strong><u>R.C Brown<\/u><\/strong>&nbsp;&#8211; Anthropology is nothing but comparative sociology.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A\/c to&nbsp;<strong><u>Raymond Firth<\/u><\/strong>&nbsp;&#8211; Anthropology is like micro-sociology as studies microcosm like corporate, university, tribal society&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><u>Kroeber<\/u><\/strong>&nbsp;c\/l&nbsp;these as &#8220;Twin Sisters&#8221;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Similarities<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Their similarity is in their&nbsp;<strong><u>interest in Social ogr &amp; behaviour<\/u><\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The basic raw material &amp; tool for the study of sociocultural Anthropology is&nbsp;<strong><u>social relationships.&nbsp;<\/u><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><u>Comparative study of social structure<\/u><\/strong>&nbsp;: for socialist they have little scope of comparison yet they can generalise, since they can compare b\/w different modern societies&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They have much&nbsp;<strong><u>common theoretical approaches,<\/u><\/strong>&nbsp;so they usually found in the same dept in University.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Sociology &amp; Social Anthropology have highly influenced each other<\/u><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Ex- the ideology of&nbsp;&nbsp;<strong><u>Emile Durkheim<\/u><\/strong>, a sociologist, has greatly influenced the doctrines of anthropologists like Malinowski &amp; Rc Brown.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><u>Hoebel<\/u><\/strong>&nbsp;has stated very clearly that &#8220;Sociology &amp; Social \u24b6 in their broad senses, are one &amp; the same&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><u>Evans prichards<\/u><\/strong>&#8221; has written that&#8221; Social \u24b6 can, therefore be regarded as a branch of&nbsp;Sociological studies, a branch which chiefly devotes itself to the study of Primitive societies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Social anthropology helping sociology<\/u><\/strong>:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Sociology has taken the ideas of&nbsp;<strong>cultural field; cultural apparatus, cultural lag etc.<\/strong>&nbsp;form social anthropology and developed them further.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Basic personality type&nbsp;discovery of&nbsp;<strong>Ralph Linton &amp; Abraham Kardiner&nbsp;<\/strong>have greatly influenced sociologists.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Applied viewpoint of study of culture<\/strong>&nbsp;is special contribution of&nbsp;<strong><u>Malinowski<\/u><\/strong>&nbsp;to sociology.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Discoveries of&nbsp;<strong><u>Ruth Benedict<\/u><\/strong>&nbsp;have been very helpful in studying various sociological problems about&nbsp;<strong>national character.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Physical anthropology and sociology<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>has exerted great influence on various problems of sociology. It has been proved from ethnological discoveries of&nbsp;<strong><u>Franz Boas<\/u>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<u>Otto Kleinberg<\/u><\/strong>&nbsp;that&nbsp;physical characteristics have nothing to do with the mental special featuresand that the&nbsp;<strong>influence of environment is the chief cause for mental differences.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u24b6 has also helped sociology by&nbsp;<strong>disproving the ideas of racism<\/strong>.&nbsp;<strong><u>Maclaver<\/u><\/strong>&nbsp;&amp; other sociologists have attached great importance to this contribution of anthropology.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Differences<\/u><\/strong>: Though the discipline of social-anthropology have developed in close association with sociology and borrowed concepts from them it does not mean that social anthropology is a branch of sociology. Both are related to Social Anthropology.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Relation<\/u><\/strong>&nbsp;&#8211; Psychology means studing &#8221;&nbsp;individual behaviour&#8221; Whereas Socio-Cultural Anthropology&nbsp; concentrates a collective behaviour.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Psychology Studies effect of&nbsp;internal environment (mind)&nbsp;on the behaviour of the individual whereas socio Cultural Anthropology Studies effect of&nbsp;external environment (Culture &amp; etc).&nbsp;On the behaviour of the individual as a part of society.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Both tries to understand&nbsp;<strong>man in the context of Social behaviour&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Interdependence<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol>\n<li><strong><u>E.B. Tylor &amp; L.H. Morgan<\/u><\/strong>&nbsp;used the concept of &#8220;<strong>Psychic Unity<\/strong>&#8221; to explain&nbsp;origin &amp; evolution of Culture&nbsp;in various institutions of society.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><u>Franz Boas<\/u><\/strong>&nbsp;depended on&nbsp;<strong>sociocultural factors<\/strong>&nbsp;to explain the behaviour of man in society.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><u>Ruth Bendict<\/u><\/strong>&nbsp;Study of Japanese Culture &amp;&nbsp;concept of culture pattern,&nbsp;<strong><u>Margaret Mead<\/u><\/strong>&nbsp;Study of&nbsp;<strong>Somoas<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong><u>Co-ra-cu-Bois<\/u><\/strong>&nbsp;in&nbsp;<strong>Alove islanders<\/strong>&nbsp;used &#8221;&nbsp;<strong>pycho analytic techniques<\/strong>&nbsp;to define personalities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><u>Lewis<\/u><\/strong>&nbsp;established the&nbsp;role of psychology&nbsp;in understanding \u201cthe ethnology of&nbsp;primitive people&#8221; Eg. the tribals of South Gujrat are influenced by&nbsp;<strong>Devi movement&nbsp;<\/strong>which is a clear case of the relationship of social psychology &amp; Social Anthropology.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Inter-relationship in a primitive society&nbsp;owes much to the&nbsp;<strong>psychological conditioning<\/strong>&nbsp;of the people in that society. Ex Historically, tribals have been exploited by moneylenders &amp; traders. Therefor tribals considers caste of Hindus are their enemies.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Traditionally \u24c5 have been using&nbsp;<strong>behavioural techniques<\/strong>&nbsp;of psychology in their field work.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Differences<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>scope of Anthropology is&nbsp;<strong>universal<\/strong>&nbsp;whereas scope of psychology is&nbsp;<strong>limited<\/strong>. Anthropology is a&nbsp;<strong>whole science<\/strong>whereas psychology is&nbsp;<strong>part science.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Psychologist considers&nbsp;tribals culture as uniform &amp; universal&nbsp;whereas \u24c5 consider each &amp; every tribal culture to be&nbsp;diverse &amp; unique.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Psychologist uses&nbsp;psycho &#8211; analytic techniques&nbsp;at stimulate whereas, \u24c5 primarily use&nbsp;field work tradition<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Conclusion<\/u><\/strong>&nbsp;&#8211; Recently, emergence of socio-biology in \u24b6 &amp; social psychology in psychology has brought these disciplines close to each other.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Relation with Life Science<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Life sciences studies about Botany, Zoology whereas Anthropology is concerned about Humans in totality. New emerging field like&nbsp;astro-life science&nbsp;are helping to understand more clearly have life may have originated on earth by comparing evidences from other plants.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Relation with Medical Sciences&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Introduction<\/u><\/strong>&nbsp;&#8211; Medical science deals with preventions, diagnosis &amp; treatment as part of management of diseases. Since&nbsp;human health is understood from the perspective of biology and culture, physical &amp; sociocultural Anthropology are associated with medical science.
