Each social institution depends on certain established rules and usages which are recognised &amp; accepted by the members of the society. These rules and regulations govern the relations b\/w individuals and groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Definition of social institution<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong><u>Ginsberg<\/u><\/strong>&nbsp;defines social institutions as definite &amp; sanctioned forms or modes of relationships between social beings in respect to one another outing to or to some extent object.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><u>Mclver<\/u><\/strong>&nbsp;defined an institution as the, \u201cestablished forms or conditions of procedure characteristic of group activity.\u201d&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Examples of social institutions<\/u><\/strong>&nbsp;: Marriage, family, education, religion etc. are ex of social institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Characteristics of (Social) Institutions<\/u><\/strong>:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol>\n<li>Every institution has some&nbsp;<strong>definite objectives or goals<\/strong>&nbsp;which are to be achieved by the members of the institution.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Every institution is&nbsp;<strong>governed by certain rules and regulations<\/strong>&nbsp;which are equally binding on all members of the institution.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There are certain&nbsp;<strong>definite procedures<\/strong>&nbsp;followed in the work of the institution.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The&nbsp;<strong>continuity<\/strong>&nbsp;of the institution depends upon the&nbsp;<strong>collective endeavour<\/strong>&nbsp;of its members.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Institutions are one of the means of&nbsp;<strong>controlling people in society&nbsp;<\/strong>and compared to other&nbsp;<strong>means of social control<\/strong>, institutions are comparatively stable.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Every institution in a society is formed&nbsp;<strong>primarily to fulfil the needs<\/strong>&nbsp;of the individuals of the society.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Types of Social institutions<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong><u>Primary Social institution<\/u>&nbsp;:<\/strong>\u00a0Sociologists often reserve the term &#8216;institution&#8217; to describe normative systems that operate in\u00a0five basic areas of life,\u00a0which may be designated as the primary institutions.\n<ol>\n<li>In determining kinship;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In providing for the legitimate use of power;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In regulating the distribution of goods and services;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In transmitting knowledge from one generation to the next; and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In regulating our relation to the supernatural.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These five basic institutions are c\/l the&nbsp;<strong>family, govt\/ state,economy, education &amp; religion<\/strong>&nbsp;respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong><u>Secondary Social institutions<\/u><\/strong>: derived from each of these five primary social institutions. For ex:\n<ol>\n<li>2\u00b0 institutions derived from&nbsp;<strong><u>family<\/u><\/strong>&nbsp;:&nbsp; marriage, divorce, monogamy, polygamy etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2\u00b0&nbsp; institutions derived from&nbsp;<strong><u>religion<\/u><\/strong>&nbsp;: temple, mosque, church etc.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2\u00b0&nbsp; institutions derived from&nbsp;<strong><u>education<\/u><\/strong>&nbsp;:&nbsp;school, college etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2\u00b0&nbsp; institutions derived from&nbsp;<strong><u>state<\/u><\/strong>&nbsp;: democracy, Parliament etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2\u00b0&nbsp; institutions derived from&nbsp;<strong><u>economy<\/u><\/strong>&nbsp;:&nbsp;trade and commerce, Immovable and movable property etc.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Importance of Social institutions<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol>\n<li>These are&nbsp;<strong>media for proper working culture<\/strong>&nbsp;in society and&nbsp;<strong>passing on of culture through generations.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Medium of passing&nbsp;<\/strong>on of morals, ideals, knowledge and behaviours etc. from one generation to other.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Medium of&nbsp;<strong>control of human behaviour.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Guide<\/strong>&nbsp;to younger generation to solve their problems.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Conclusion<\/u><\/strong>: A social institution never becomes extinct.
