The total&nbsp;<strong>social environment of man is his culture<\/strong>&nbsp;b\/c it is made by man himself.&nbsp; Thus all&nbsp;material &amp; non-material things made by man represent culture. And to understand approach to study.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both the concepts,&nbsp;<strong>ethnocentrism &amp; cultural relativism<\/strong>,&nbsp; are related to studying culture, however both are at poles apart in subject matter.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ethnocentrism&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Acc to&nbsp;<strong><u>William Graham Summer&nbsp;<\/u><\/strong>in his book \u201c<strong>Folkways<\/strong>\u201d defines ethnocentrism as the view of the things which one\u2019s own group is the centre of everything &amp; others are scaled &amp; rated with reference to it.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>it is attitude&nbsp; to evaluate &amp; studying other culture on&nbsp;<strong>the basis on one\u2019s own standard<\/strong>. it means &#8211; inherent&nbsp;<strong>bias<\/strong>towards viewing others culture.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Due to this approach ; people think that their own culture is correct &amp; people who don\u2019t conform to their views are immoral &amp; inferior.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Roots of Ethnocentrism<\/u><\/strong>&nbsp;&#8211; lies in a&nbsp;primordial feelings of an individual\u2019s identification with his group. This identification was termed as&nbsp;<strong>Syngenism by&nbsp;<u>Gumplowicz<\/u><\/strong>&nbsp;. It arises out of intense \u201cWe feeling\u201d which is not inherently bad it becomes so when it grows to such proportions that we bear hatred towards others &amp; attempt to impose out will upon them when an&nbsp;<strong><u>air of superiority<\/u><\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Example<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>For using this approach&nbsp;<strong>classical evolutionist<\/strong>&nbsp;are vehemently criticised while giving there theory of&nbsp;<strong>Unilinear cultural evolution.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For example in North American eating dog is barbaric &amp; in Hindu culture eating beef is immoral.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Negative Fallout\u2019s of Ethnocentrism<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>It breeds&nbsp;<strong>intolerance and hatred<\/strong>&nbsp;for other culture and extreme ethnocentricism may lead to&nbsp;<strong>violence<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It&nbsp;<strong>hinders our understanding<\/strong>&nbsp;of customs and cultures of other societies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keeps us away from understanding our own culture as we don&#8217;t question our own culture.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Genesis of racism.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Human rights violation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stalled progress and disturbed progress. E.g. ISIS terrorism.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Conclusion&nbsp;&#8211; Acc to Sumner \u201cEthnocentism in modern nations is really the sentiment of&nbsp;<strong>patriotism<\/strong>&nbsp;in all its philosophical fullness; that is, in its rationality &amp; its extravagance &amp; exaggeration.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cultural Relativism&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It is an anthropological attitude which views that&nbsp;all cultural patterns&nbsp;are&nbsp;<strong>equally valid<\/strong>&nbsp;and hence every culture or any part of it should be viewed&nbsp;<strong>objectively<\/strong>&nbsp;in terms of its own problems, logic and rationale.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Roots of Cultural Relativism&nbsp;<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><em>It\u2019s origin, acc to epistemological claims, is in German enlightenment,&nbsp;<\/em><strong><em><u>Immanuel Kant<\/u><\/em><\/strong><em>&nbsp;argued that human beings are not capable of direct, unmediated knowledge of the world. Our experiences of the world are mediated thr the human mind, which&nbsp;<\/em><strong><em>universality structures perceptions<\/em><\/strong><em>&nbsp;acc to sensibilities concerning&nbsp;<\/em><strong><em>time &amp; space<\/em><\/strong><em>.&nbsp;<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><u>Frans Boas<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0 his book \u201c<strong>Race, Language and Culture<\/strong>\u201d (1940)\u00a0he advocated\u00a0<strong>not to rank or judge one culture acc. to Std. of other another<\/strong>.\u00a0 He est. this principle as\u00a0<strong><u>axiomatic<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0.\n<ul>\n<li>Thus opposed ethnocentric&#8217; stand taken by 19th centure classical evolutionist &amp; cultural &amp; racial superiority of white people&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>proposed the concept of cultural relativism to counter this social evil.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Acc to&nbsp;<strong><u>Melville Herskovits<\/u><\/strong>: judgments are based on experience &amp; experience is interpreted by each individual in terms of his own enculturation.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Features of Cultural Relativism<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Every cultural pattern is equally valid<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Not judging other&#8217;s culture from one&#8217;s own standards<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Analyzing the things from its internal consistence and logic.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Trying to understand why people do particular thing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nonjudgmental appreciation of strengths and weaknesses of other cultures and societies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Posture of neutrality.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Example<\/u><\/strong>&nbsp;:&nbsp; beef eating in non-Hindus and cousin marriage in Islam should be viewed in its own logic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><em>What should be a ideal stand on beef eating&nbsp;<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Significance of cultural relativism<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Tolerance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Opens new vistas of knowledge<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>World peace<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Criticism of cultural relativism<\/u><\/strong>:&nbsp;<strong>Elizabeth Zachenter<\/strong>&nbsp;says that cultural relativism is often used to justify traditions desired by dominant or powerful class for example for&nbsp;justifying fundamentalistic views. Thus, though criticized, cultural relativism shows that&nbsp;<strong>every culture is rooted in its needs and surroundings.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>concept of Cultural Relativism been so dear to Anthropologists<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This understanding of culture confronts \u24c5 with two problems&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol>\n<li>How to escape the unconscious bonds of one\u2019s own culture, which inevitably bias out perceptions of &amp;
